Camp Crafts

Our Young Women had the opportunity to make some pretty neat crafts this year at camp. They learned how to wood burn, make cement stepping stones, and cloth covered journals. Some of the older girls learned how to put together flower arrangements. I still have my stepping stone out front. Way cute!

Camp Testimony Meeting - The Gold Chair

Prior to camp our family had been going through some old family treasures. We came across a chair that had been in the family for several years. It was beaten up a little, but it turned out to become a very special part of this past year's camp. I asked my parents if it would be okay for me to paint this chair GOLD and to recover the seat cushion. They said yes. I brought the chair to camp and had it sitting up front from the beginning of the week until the end. I can't begin to tell you how many questions I received about this chair. I simply replied...you'll see. I asked our Stake President if he would address the Young Women prior to testimony meeting about the Plan of Salvation and to wrap up a week that was filled with activities based on our theme It's My Turn on Earth. He did a wonderful job. I had also asked him to talk to the YW about NO EMPTY CHAIRS in Heaven. This chair turned into a chair that would be used for the Young Woman waiting in line to have their turn to share their testimony with the rest of us. To me it turned into something so much more. This chair represented my family and in our family there can be no empty chairs.

Camp Class - 100 Dresses

I had the opportunity prior to Young Women's Camp to read a book entitled 100 Dresses. This book is an award winning children's book. The message behind the story is a powerful one. It inspired me to come up with the following camp activity. I wanted to have a way to really touch our Young Women. I wanted them to not only remember camp, but to remember that there are several wonderful blessings that will come their way if they choose the right. I decided that it would be neat if we could decorate the mess hall with 100 dresses...which we did and it turned out to be really beautiful. The 100 dresses would represent all of the wonderful things that these Young Women would do in their lives here on earth. Everything from going to the Prom to dance recitals that they would be in to special Sunday meetings, etc... Up front on the stage we placed the 3 White Dresses and a photo of the Orlando Temple. We placed rose petals on the floor and hung white lights up front. We really strived to make this activity a spiritual one. When the Young Women arrived in the mess hall I was impressed to see how reverent they were. I had invited all of the Bishop's Wives from the Stake to come and share three dresses and the experiences they had had while wearing those dresses in their lives. Wow...the spirit was amazing! Then...I presented a book to each Young Women's President called My Wedding Day. They each took their group of Young Women to a private place within the mess hall and began reading the story. This particular book talks about the happiness a father has on that special day when his daughter is to be married in the temple. The leaders and young women were in tears. After reading the story...we shared a You Tube Video called The Three White Dresses and summarized why the three white dresses were so important. The covenants we will make with the Lord while wearing these three white dresses will not only draw us closer to our Heavenly Father, but enable us to be able to return to His presence someday. Yes...the tears continued. At the very end of the activity...each Young Women received a little white bag with a CTR shield. Inside was a REMEMBER necklace made out of Gold to remind them of camp, to remind them of the activity, and to remind them to always Stand for the Right. Words can not express the amazing spirit and joy that filled that room on that day. Our Heavenly Father loves each one of us and truly wants us to be able to come and live with him again some day.

Camp Class - Hold To The Rod Activity

This camp activity & class is one that I'm sure many of you have either heard about or done in your area. It tied in perfectly with our camp theme this year It's My Turn On Earth. We had a mini lesson prior to beginning the activity based off of President Monson's talk on Role Models. After the class...each Young Woman placed a bandanna over their eyes and had to make it from one side of the field to the other. We then spoke to the girls about the Holy Ghost and how we have to listen to the guidance that is being given to us in our lives. The next step on our adventure required the girls to once again cover their eyes with the bandanna. We had set up rope running around some trees which would represent Holding to the Iron Rod. The girls held on to the rope and were tempted by the YCL's to let go. Some of our girls did. After the activity those that did felt really bad about doing so. We had the rod (rope) run near the lake and also had the large and spacious building with some rowdy YCL's taunting the younger girls. At the end of the rope there was a tree that had white bags attached to it. The Young Women were able to take away a little bag filled with fruit snacks to enjoy. This simple little exercise was one of our camp highlights. By going through the motions of reenacting the Book of Mormon story touched many of our girls in a spiritual way.

Camp Activity - Don't Go Through Life Half-Baked

This was a fun pre-lunch activity we did half way through our week at camp. Following this activity we had a potato bar lunch. YUM!

Step One:
Make potato t-shirts for each YW that will be participating in the story.
Step Two:
Make potato puppets for those girls to hold that represent the characters.
Step Three:
Make brown bags with letters on them to spell the out the saying Don't Go Through Life Half-Baked. Use these to create your potato patch
Step Four:
Read and act out the story below...

The Greater Potator Patch

Once upon a time in a warm and sunny valley lived a very fine crop of potatoes. These potatoes were all members of the great “Potato Ward”. A fine and widely cultivated bunch of spuds who spent much of their time wondering just what their final dish would be. But if you look closely, you could almost see how they molded their own lives.

Some spuds had their heads so far down in the dirt they’ll probably still be there long past the harvest.

Irri-tator was one of the most well-known potatoes. She had large eyes and saw everything that was going on around her. Her eyes were big, but unfortunately, so was her mouth. How irritating!

Hesi-tator would like to join us, but she’s so unsure of herself that she hangs back. And you know what happens to she who hesitates!

Commen-tator isn’t fun to have around because she has some half-baked comment for everything.

You should meet Agi-tator; she really stirs things up and gets under everyone’s skin.

Then, there’s Dic-tator, she likes to have everything dished up HER way. While Spec-tator is just content to sit back and watch all the other French fries at work.

You haven’t lived until you’ve met Instiga-tator, you might just want to “mash” her, but a seasoning of love will be more productive.

Don’t think you’ve met ALL of the potatoes in our potato patch! The best is still to come.

Meet Sweet-tator, you’ll love her. She’s sugar coated and easy to digest.

And the largest variety and most common potato of all is the PAR-TICI-POTATOR, and all those like her—this spuds for you!!!

There are many ways that you can fix a potato much like how the lives we live.
Hash Browns – She is ready to serve bright & early in the morning, you know she’s ready for anything that may come because she’s so compact and organized.

Baked – She knows right from wrong and stays in the right place at all times. She can really take the heat. Don’t get her mixed up with some of her acquaintances who are only half-baked.

Boiled – She stays to herself. She is very plain, doesn’t have much spice in her life and doesn’t develop her talents.

Fried – She jumps into any kind of fun available and she doesn’t care whose company she’s in. Talk about out of the frying pan and into the fire!

Scalloped – She’s a happy-go-lucky dish who enjoys the “spiciness” of her friends. She’s always the main ingredient.

Mashed – She loves to get involved with all the other spuds, even the little ones. She’s quite a mixer.

French Fries – She’s the leader of the group, a very upright lady. She’s very friendly and the life of the party. A wonderful missionary and a great example because she can be served with just about anything and is great on any occasion.

Our personalities are quite like potato dishes. Some of us have thick skins, some of us go around half-baked, and some of us are content to join the others and be served “au-gratin”.

Don’t go through life half-baked!
The End!!!

Camp Activity - Stay On The High Road

Stay on the High Road

You have the potential to become anything to which you set your mind. You have a mind and a body and a spirit. With these three working together, you can walk the high road that leads to achievement and happiness. But this will require effort and sacrifice and faith. Journey with us through the map laid out for you in the For Strength of Youth Pamphlet.

I had really wanted to come up with a fun activity for Girl's Camp based on the messages in the For Strength of Youth Pamphlet. After searching lds.org I came across the talk given by President Hinckley entited Stay on the High Road. It hit me...we could do a fun activity with cars and introduce the different areas in the pamphlet at the road blocks. So...off I went making BOX CARS with my family.

Stay on the High Road Activity Outline
1. All Young Women get inside a CAR.
2. Play the game Criss Cross
a. Criss Cross
Divide into 4 teams. Set up 5 cones. One for each corner and one in the middle. Send each team into a corner. The object of the game is to see which team can get to the opposite (diagonal) corner the fastest using the designated method that the leader calls out (eg. if the leader calls out "hopping," the teams must hop to the opposite corner). This will create quite a "bottleneck" or "traffic jam" in the middle each time. Keep score of which team wins each crossing. First team to 5 wins.

Good Crossing Methods:
Hopping
Sprint
Backwards Walk
Skipping
Walking on Tip Toes

3. Play first section of President Gordon B. Hinckley’s Talk – compare choices to the game that was just played.
4. Talk on Education
5. Play Key Game – All YW are in their CARS!!!
a. Keys
Everybody but one person sits by a cone. The cones are scattered all over the field. The person standing has a set of keys in her hand. With her other hand she grabs some one's hand. This person gets up and follows the leader who weaves in and out of the cones on the field. The person who has gotten up away from their cone then grabs someone else's hand who grabs another person's hand. This keeps going until the leader drops the keys on the field then everyone standing runs and sits by a cone. The person left standing is the new leader. Upbeat music will be played!
b. At every STOP show STOP SIGN and read back… (SEE BELOW)
i. Friends
ii. Standards
iii. Repentance
iv. Modesty
v. Entertainment
vi. Respect Body
vii. Pray

6. Play Red Light Green Light – This could be added if there needs to be a change in the game above. Continue with STOP SIGNS!
7. Testimony about For Strength of Youth and Staying on the High Road

Friends
As you walk the road of life, be careful of your friends. They can make you or break you. Be generous in helping the unfortunate and those in distress. But bind to your friends of your own kind, friends who will encourage you, stand with you, live as you desire to live; who will enjoy the same kind of entertainment; and who will resist the evil that you determine to resist.

Standards
To accomplish His plan of happiness, the Great Creator planted within us an instinct that makes boys interested in girls and girls interested in boys. That powerful inclination can lead to beautiful experiences, or it can lead to terribly ugly experiences. Choose to keep yourself morally clean!

Repentance
The Lord has provided for us repentance and forgiveness. I wish to emphasize that if you make a mistake, ti can be forgiven, it can be overcome, it can be lived above. You can go on to success and happiness. But I hope that such an experience will not come your way, and I am confident it will not if you will set your mind and pray for the strength to walk the high road, which at times may be lonely but which will lead to peace and happiness.

Modesty
Modesty in dress and manner will assist in protecting against temptation. It may be difficult to find modest clothing, but it can be found with enough effort. I sometimes wish every girl had access to a sewing machine and training in how to use it. She could then make her own attractive clothing. I suppose this is an unrealistic wish. You can be refreshing and buoyant and beautiful in your dress and in your behavior.

Entertainment
Stay away from sleazy entertainment. It may be attractive, but in all too many cases it is degrading. I think I do know something about these things, and it is out of my heart and my love that I plead with you to stay on the high road. Create fun with your good friends. Sing and dance, swim and hike, become involved in projects together, and live life with zest and excitement.

Respect Body
Respect your bodies. The Lord has described them as temples. So many these days disfigure their bodies with tattoos. How shortsighted. These markings last for life. Once in place, they cannot be removed except through a difficult and costly process. I cannot understand why any girl would subject herself to such a thing. I plead with you to avoid disfigurement of this kind. And while I am speaking of things to avoid, I again mention drugs. Please do not experiment with them. Stay away from them as they are a foul disease.

Pray
Never assume that you can make it alone. You need the help of the Lord. Never hesitate to get on your knees in some private place and speak with Him. What a marvelous and wonderful thing is prayer. Think of it. We can actually speak with our Father in Heaven. He will hear and respond, but we need to listen to that response. Nothing is too serious and nothing too unimportant to share with Him. He has said, “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. (Matt. 11:30)

Camp Value Nature Walk

Value Nature Walk

The Personal Progress program uses the eight Young Women values to help you understand more fully who you are, why you are here on earth, and what you should be doing as a daughter of God to prepare for the day you go to the temple to make sacred covenants. As we walk through each value songs will be shared, project ideas will come to life and messages based on each value will help us remember to live these standards throughout our lives.

This activity turned out to be a very spiritual one. Each ward made ornaments to decorate a tree along the path in their value color. We had them share the value scripture, prepare a song based on that value, a short message about the value, and we had a member of their ward share a value project idea. The trees were so fun to see. Each one unique just like each one of us. At the end of our Value Nature Walk we had a member of our Stake Young Women's Presidency share the message given by Sister Dalton about VIRTUE and presented each Young Woman with a GOLD bandanna that read "RETURN TO VIRTUE" to be tied at the end of their walking sticks. We asked each Young Woman if they would commit to completing their Personal Progress by the time they graduated out of the Young Women's Program. We then had each young lady raise their sticks up to the sky to show the pledge they were making. As leaders...we stood in ah watching.
