Young Women's Activity - Future Husband Posters

My sister, Amy, sent me pictures from her Young Women's Mutual Night this past week.  The Young Women put together posters of what they are looking for in a FUTURE HUSBAND.  Apparently the girls loved this activity and I thought their posters were really unique and different.  I love that they are thinking already about choices they will be making in the future.  I hope they will all find what they are looking for and more!

I'd rather have a "Future Self" poster. What will I study? Look like (healthy and strong!), act like, mother like, decorate like, drive, university or college I'd like to attend, where I'd like to live, how many kids I'd like to have...you know, things they can have some control over if they're living free of addiction and debt. That's a good lesson - perhaps next month?

Setting them up for disappointment! Next time do something about them as an individual and how to obtain personal goals.

How about a career poster, a poster about college, who they want to be, rather than have in a husband...much better for such impressive young girls. The frontal lobe of the brain the determines personality, reasoning and even taste buds doesn't even finish developing until the early 20's... so how are they supposed to know what they may or may want in a future mate?

When I was in mutual, we actually did a "fashion show" where all the young women had to wear their mother's wedding dresses and parade on stage in front of the young men. I tell that to friends- and THERAPISTS- now, and they have a hard time believing me. PLEASE stop teaching these girls they are worthless. I know that you are just playing into the hands of the leadership of the church, but you do have at least some control over what is taught. Even if you only do it to bring the church more tithing money, consider me as an example: not only did I leave, I influenced others to leave the church as well. Sure, some of my former beehive "sisters" have gone on to have six or seven kids who are also forced to attend church, but over half of them have lost their faith. Translation- net financial losses.

These girls are 12 and 13 years old...they should be thinking about school studies, friends, acne, a social awareness, a personal identity. They should not be thinking about a husband and what that husband wants in them...this is not normal or natural for girls this age. Let them be young teenage girls.

Wow, what unfairly harsh comments. Girls for hundreds of years have liked to talk about their future lives...starting at about age 12 or so, including who they may end up marrying or dating someday. I know I did, all through my teen years, and I have yet to meet a single teenage girl who doesn't light up and get all giggly and excited when they think about dating good young men someday, and at some point beyond that, marrying someone.

I see nothing wrong with an activity like this, though the ideas of adding future careers, college dreams, and self-improvement are also good. But I think young men and women SHOULD be taught from a young age that someday they're going to share their life with someone, and there is nothing wrong with recognizing positive traits in others and cultivating friendships with good people.

I love that you shared this!! This is great to set goals and standards as well as for young women to figure out who they are through what they esteem most important in a mate. THANK YOU!
