Camp Activity - Stay On The High Road

Stay on the High Road

You have the potential to become anything to which you set your mind. You have a mind and a body and a spirit. With these three working together, you can walk the high road that leads to achievement and happiness. But this will require effort and sacrifice and faith. Journey with us through the map laid out for you in the For Strength of Youth Pamphlet.

I had really wanted to come up with a fun activity for Girl's Camp based on the messages in the For Strength of Youth Pamphlet. After searching lds.org I came across the talk given by President Hinckley entited Stay on the High Road. It hit me...we could do a fun activity with cars and introduce the different areas in the pamphlet at the road blocks. So...off I went making BOX CARS with my family.

Stay on the High Road Activity Outline
1. All Young Women get inside a CAR.
2. Play the game Criss Cross
a. Criss Cross
Divide into 4 teams. Set up 5 cones. One for each corner and one in the middle. Send each team into a corner. The object of the game is to see which team can get to the opposite (diagonal) corner the fastest using the designated method that the leader calls out (eg. if the leader calls out "hopping," the teams must hop to the opposite corner). This will create quite a "bottleneck" or "traffic jam" in the middle each time. Keep score of which team wins each crossing. First team to 5 wins.

Good Crossing Methods:
Hopping
Sprint
Backwards Walk
Skipping
Walking on Tip Toes

3. Play first section of President Gordon B. Hinckley’s Talk – compare choices to the game that was just played.
4. Talk on Education
5. Play Key Game – All YW are in their CARS!!!
a. Keys
Everybody but one person sits by a cone. The cones are scattered all over the field. The person standing has a set of keys in her hand. With her other hand she grabs some one's hand. This person gets up and follows the leader who weaves in and out of the cones on the field. The person who has gotten up away from their cone then grabs someone else's hand who grabs another person's hand. This keeps going until the leader drops the keys on the field then everyone standing runs and sits by a cone. The person left standing is the new leader. Upbeat music will be played!
b. At every STOP show STOP SIGN and read back… (SEE BELOW)
i. Friends
ii. Standards
iii. Repentance
iv. Modesty
v. Entertainment
vi. Respect Body
vii. Pray

6. Play Red Light Green Light – This could be added if there needs to be a change in the game above. Continue with STOP SIGNS!
7. Testimony about For Strength of Youth and Staying on the High Road

Friends
As you walk the road of life, be careful of your friends. They can make you or break you. Be generous in helping the unfortunate and those in distress. But bind to your friends of your own kind, friends who will encourage you, stand with you, live as you desire to live; who will enjoy the same kind of entertainment; and who will resist the evil that you determine to resist.

Standards
To accomplish His plan of happiness, the Great Creator planted within us an instinct that makes boys interested in girls and girls interested in boys. That powerful inclination can lead to beautiful experiences, or it can lead to terribly ugly experiences. Choose to keep yourself morally clean!

Repentance
The Lord has provided for us repentance and forgiveness. I wish to emphasize that if you make a mistake, ti can be forgiven, it can be overcome, it can be lived above. You can go on to success and happiness. But I hope that such an experience will not come your way, and I am confident it will not if you will set your mind and pray for the strength to walk the high road, which at times may be lonely but which will lead to peace and happiness.

Modesty
Modesty in dress and manner will assist in protecting against temptation. It may be difficult to find modest clothing, but it can be found with enough effort. I sometimes wish every girl had access to a sewing machine and training in how to use it. She could then make her own attractive clothing. I suppose this is an unrealistic wish. You can be refreshing and buoyant and beautiful in your dress and in your behavior.

Entertainment
Stay away from sleazy entertainment. It may be attractive, but in all too many cases it is degrading. I think I do know something about these things, and it is out of my heart and my love that I plead with you to stay on the high road. Create fun with your good friends. Sing and dance, swim and hike, become involved in projects together, and live life with zest and excitement.

Respect Body
Respect your bodies. The Lord has described them as temples. So many these days disfigure their bodies with tattoos. How shortsighted. These markings last for life. Once in place, they cannot be removed except through a difficult and costly process. I cannot understand why any girl would subject herself to such a thing. I plead with you to avoid disfigurement of this kind. And while I am speaking of things to avoid, I again mention drugs. Please do not experiment with them. Stay away from them as they are a foul disease.

Pray
Never assume that you can make it alone. You need the help of the Lord. Never hesitate to get on your knees in some private place and speak with Him. What a marvelous and wonderful thing is prayer. Think of it. We can actually speak with our Father in Heaven. He will hear and respond, but we need to listen to that response. Nothing is too serious and nothing too unimportant to share with Him. He has said, “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. (Matt. 11:30)

This was one of my YW favorite activities! They not only had fun and craziness; but as one of my YW put it "it really made me actually think that I can set high goals and achieve them too, even though my mom tells me that all the time, it just made sense here." I thought it was a super way to put across a very important concept in the ever expanding life of our YW that they CAN achieve success, happiness and peace...may not always be easy, but they can do it...and it was super funny to watch!
